If you want to know what getting dragged into the hiking lifestyle looks like, look no further than my first-ever mountain climb: the Pedraforca. A friend dropped a random invite in a WhatsApp group, lured a few of us in with a gentle warm-up trail, and then bam, straight into a brutal 5-kilometer climb with 1,000 meters of elevation gain. Back then, I had zero clue what elevation profiles actually meant, and stepping onto that loose gravel scree (la tartera) felt like a mild existential crisis. But reaching that summit? Unbeatable :)

Once we finally collapsed at the Pollegó Superior to eat our sandwiches, she arrived: the yellow-billed chough, or chova piquigualda (Pyrrhocorax graculus). You can't miss them, jet-black feathers, bright neon-yellow beaks, and a screeching call that completely defies their sleek look, always lingering around to inspect your lunch crumbs while you're gasping for oxygen.

I drew her because she represents that messy, unforgettable first mountain. I wanted to skip the boring, generic tourist posters and create something real that fellow hikers would instantly smile at because if you've made it up to those 2,506 meters, you've definitely crossed paths with her.
